Over the last decade, there has been a large increase in the number of emerging markets now importing LNG going from 7 countries in 2010 to 17 in 2017. With the development of technologies such as floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), LNG is now more flexible and can be supplied at a lower cost.

It has been stated by many industry players that natural gas is at the very heart of the energy transition, with the CEO of ENGIE stating “gas is now central to the energy revolution we are living through”. With new technologies being developed and new policies coming into play, the whole industry is aiding in promoting the true potential of gas and its effectiveness as a partner for renewables.

The energy landscape is becoming increasingly complex, reflecting a transition to more diverse energy systems. The energy transition is partially fuelled by the emergence of new technologies and innovative breakthroughs in existing technologies. Technical innovation is driven by complex drivers and feedback mechanisms between economic, technological, social, and political circumstances.

Growing as a share of the global energy mix: In 2017, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), “global natural gas demand grew by 3%, the highest increase since 2010” and “preliminary data suggest 3.7% year-on-year (YOY) growth, double the average growth rate of 1.5% over the prior five years” (IEA Gas Market Report 2018, IEA Preliminary Estimates 2017).

Gas has established itself as a truly indispensable ally in the global endeavour to tackle emissions. Additionally, there is a limited growth potential in the demand from conventional gas markets. This opportunity has fueled the development of Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) to facilitate access to newer and emerging markets. Due to the flexibility of operations, increased natural gas production, time and cost savings during construction, the FSRU market is experiencing a period of rapid growth.

The rising popularity of floating power vessels has the potential for continued growth in the future.  Bringing electricity to remote locations has always been a challenge for countries with large island territories because laying subsea cables to connect these islands to the mainland grid can be cost prohibitive. As a result, islands need to be self-sufficient in generating electricity and mobile power generating units, such as a floating power vessel, offer a feasible solution.

In recent years, the natural gas and LNG industry has grown from strength to strength and regularly welcomes positive developments and outlooks. Most recently in the EIA 2018 Annual Energy Outlook, it was reported that most new electricity generation capacity will be natural gas/renewables after 2022 thanks to the low natural gas prices.

It can take months, perhaps a year or two, to get through the Front End Loading (FEL) stages with current industry approaches to large gas projects. A much faster, lower risk approach should be taken as an alternative that avoids eroding value. The value must be realised sooner i.e in pre-FEED and the best way to do this is with a collaborative multi-disciplinary team working in an agile way to understand and model the technical and commercial aspects of each concept.
