At last count four separate project developers are proposing LNG import terminals in Australia. These come just as Australia is ramping up LNG production to overtake Qatar as the world's largest LNG exporter. So what is going on? A combination of volatile gas demand, declining mature gas fields and LNG exports will lead to impending gas shortages where gas is consumed most in Australia: on the east coast.  LNG is now both the partial cause and the potential solution to these impending gas shortages.

LNG trucking continues to play a major role in meeting demand in China. We're seeing phenomenal growth in China's LNG demand, driven by government-mandated coal-to-gas switching. Serious air pollution issues have led to new environmental policies prompting a reduction in coal in favour of cleaner fuels, including gas. How can China ensure local gas demand is met, without the price hikes seen last winter?

Currently, the majority of industry players are all thinking about and working towards the same goal; the energy transition. From changing business models and policy shifts to technological advancements in power generation and storage, gas and renewable energy players are all keen to achieve the climate change goals set.

A key topic within the industry right now is the discussion on gas trading and exactly what will happen; not only in the short-term but also in the long-term. With global factors influencing the European trading market, it is essential for buyers and sellers to discuss together the future outlook.

The industry has recently seen the European gas demand rebound following a previous downward trend. The question being asked now is, what are the drivers of this and will they continue? Keen to hear more about LNG imports into Europe and exactly how the Asian market development will impact not only pricing but availability too, Gastech Insights spoke with Sheikh Mohamed Althani, Chairman of Mohajl Group.

When people learn that I am an engineer working in the energy industry, I am generally asked one of two questions:  “Are there many women doing what you do?” or ”Why is petrol so expensive?” Sometimes I am asked: “What made you decide you wanted to do that?”  The first two questions are infuriating, particularly when they sound like a broken record being played out over 20 years, but I am always keen to answer the third.

As we witness the energy market grow and evolve to meet the increased supply and demand, we are also experiencing another change; increased diversity in the workforce. While many companies recognise that a varied workforce makes for more qualified and innovative staff, there is still a way to go for the energy industry to be fully diversified.

Gas has established itself as a truly indispensable ally in the global endeavour to tackle emissions. Additionally, there is a limited growth potential in the demand from conventional gas markets. This opportunity has fueled the development of Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) to facilitate access to newer and emerging markets. Due to the flexibility of operations, increased natural gas production, time and cost savings during construction, the FSRU market is experiencing a period of rapid growth.

The rising popularity of floating power vessels has the potential for continued growth in the future.  Bringing electricity to remote locations has always been a challenge for countries with large island territories because laying subsea cables to connect these islands to the mainland grid can be cost prohibitive. As a result, islands need to be self-sufficient in generating electricity and mobile power generating units, such as a floating power vessel, offer a feasible solution.

Inter-connected and fast-changing gas markets are providing challenges that require a steady supply of recruits motivated by the potential to have an international, and dynamic career. And that’s what motivated me to develop my professional path in the industry over twenty years ago. I had already completed my post-graduate studies in France, England and the U.S., and so I fixed on the energy industry as being a sector with amazing international prospects.

My first interactions with LNG came during an internship I did while studying Political Science at the University of Calgary. The internship was with former Canadian diplomat and ambassador, Paul Frazer in Washington, DC at his lobbying firm. At that time, Congress was passing legislation to streamline LNG export permits for the Department of Energy. I was able to work on related projects, allowing me to do research and attend committee hearings in the Senate.

We are in a critical transition period where global energy demand is growing fast, and the world is moving towards cleaner energy sources.  Natural gas is playing a dominant role in this transition, providing the backbone for delivering clean and reliable energy to homes and businesses, and is becoming an alternative fuel for land and marine transportation.
