Iain is an ex-mariner with 14 years seagoing experience onboard ships with Ocean Fleets, Bibby Line, Esso International and Conoco/Maersk Floating Production.

In 1999, Iain resigned from the operational marine industry to progress the design and development of training and reference materials through the company he founded: Seamanship International Ltd.In January 2008 Seamanship International Ltd, merged with Witherbys Publishing Ltd, a 270 year old company and the most respected name in marine and insurance publishing. The merger saw the extraction of that business from the City of London to a new facility outside Edinburgh. The exporting returns of this business were recognised by the Scottish Office and in 2007 it received the Queens Award for International Trade.

The merged business manages the publishing of the publications and products for: Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), Society of International Gas tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO), Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Tanker Structure Co-Operative Forum (TSCF), International Tanker Owners Pollution Fund (ITOPF), Instititute of Risk Management (IRM), International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters, the Skuld P&I Club, and they are the digital publishers for the UN Agency for shipping, The International Maritime Organization (IMO).

In 2013 Witherby Publishing Group was recognized as one of the ‘Best Workplaces in Scotland’.
