Mary Hemmingsen is National Sector Leader for Power and Utilities and a Partner in our Advisory Services practice.  Mary brings over 20 years of senior experience, conceiving, structuring and implementing complex power service, asset acquisition and Infrastructure investment/development arrangements, as well as well as leading business process improvements and delivering financial and operating results.

Mary’s expertise includes a unique blend of experience and skills in both strategic and operating roles and across all aspects of the utility and power sector including lead roles in operations, finance, procurement and development.

Professional and Industry Experience

Prior to joining KPMG, Mary held senior executive positions with Brookfield Power and Utilities Group.  Mary activated an aggressive corporate strategy to improve revenue security and advance business development interests backed by long term contracts. 
 
Mary built relationships with government and others as well as active engagement in informing and negotiating the processes, frameworks, structures and terms of long term supply and asset development arrangements.

Mary advised on the process and terms framework and inputs and submissions towards final award for a $700 million infrastructure redevelopment as well as development of structure for a $1.7 billion consortium infrastructure development.

Representative Industry Experience

Mary held Executive and Corporate Finance positions at BC Hydro as well as served  in the role of Chief Procurement Officer, including establishing the supporting organizational structure and recruitment of senior management team in Vancouver, British Columbia. In this role, Mary:

established a new multi-skilled business unit, providing sophisticated cross-company procurement, supply chain management and purchasing services for over $1 billion annual spend. 

Realized supply chain value as a strategic business enabler; and delivered bottom line and efficiency improvements; reduced costs and improved supply cycle times with increased quality of supply and service.

Led a management team and 750 union and non-union employees overseeing a multidisciplinary head office and regional offices, encompassing customer care and operations, marketing and sales, demand and supply planning, finance and human resources in a 900,000 km2 area representing 1.8 million customers and $3.5 billion in 
revenues.
 
Established enterprise wide power planning, activated utility supply development and acquired non- utility energy supply, improving process elements to define alternatives, risks and overall transparency as well as contract structures to execute on plan.  Led numerous power planning and contracting processes, including achieving regulatory approval of a Long Term Acquisition Plan of $10 billion+, related infrastructure of $10
billion+ and other supply agreements totalling over $20 billion.  Conceived and led implementation of associated long term supply procurement arrangements.
