Rajeev Kannan was recently assigned to be Director & General Manager, Head of Investment Banking, Asia of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) to be based in Singapore. In his new role, Rajeev will be responsible for a number of key products including Derivatives, Syndications, Project Finance, ECA Finance, Asset Finance, Securitisation and M&A & Sponsor Finance.

Prior to this new role, Rajeev was Director & General Manager, Structured Finance Department based in Tokyo headquarters where Rajeev was responsible for Structured Finance business in Japan and globally. Rajeev moved to Tokyo in April 2012 as General Manager of Project & Export Finance Department and was promoted to Director & General Manager of Structured Finance Department in April, 2015. Rajeev was first non-Japanese Director/General Manager to be based in SMBC’s Tokyo headquarters.

Rajeev has over 20 years of experience markets covering various products including infrastructure & project finance, M&A and Sponsor Finance, Aircraft Finance, Shipping Finance, ECA Finance and Structured Credit transactions.

Prior to moving to Tokyo in May 2012, Rajeev was based in Singapore and was General Manager & Head of Structured Finance Asia Pacific, with responsibility for infrastructure & project finance, M&A and sponsor finance, ECA finance, and aircraft finance for the Asia Pacific region (ex Japan). Rajeev joined Sumitomo Bank in May 1997 in Singapore and helped build the project and infrastructure finance franchise to one of the strongest in the Asia Pacific region.

Rajeev has also been involved in key SMBC initiatives in Asia such as a) Clifford Capital Pte Ltd (a company established jointly with Temasek Holdings of Singapore with support from Singapore Ministry of Finance), b) PT Indonesia Infrastructure Finance (IIF) (a finance company established with Indonesian Ministry of Finance, IFC, ADB, DEG), c) Core India Infrastructure Fund (a PE fund established with Kotak Mahindra Bank and Brookfield Infrastructure) and FDN in Columbia (a finance company owned by Columbia’s Ministry of Finance, IFC, CAF and SMBC).

Rajeev is a member of Board of Commissioners of IIF and sits on the investment committee of Core India Infrastructure Fund. Rajeev was also founding board of director of Clifford Capital and SMBC Capital India Pvt. Ltd.

Prior to joining SMBC, Rajeev worked for ICICI Bank in Mumbai for around 3 years from 1994 to 1997 after graduating from Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani in India with a master’s degree in management and engineering.
