T2.2 High Precision Methane Leak Detection via Microsatellites
Natural gas is an efficient energy source: abundant, cheap and clean. However, natural gas operations are prone to methane leaks. The accurate measurement of these emissions from oil & gas infrastructure is a challenging but urgent task to address immediate operational needs and mitigate climate change. Methane leaks threaten safety and create financial liabilities for oil & gas companies that are scrutinized by banks, which fund its projects. Today, these companies are already spending more than $6 billion a year monitoring methane emissions. However, current monitoring solutions by trucks, drones, and airplanes are cost-prohibitive to deploy at scale, logistically complex and prone to errors.
Bluefield provides a cost-effective and scalable solution to monitor methane emissions by deploying a constellation of high precision methane-tracking microsatellites. This solution starts with an advanced implementation of a spectrally filtered optical gas sensing technique, which already has space heritage from several successful NASA missions carried in the past three decades. Hosted on backpack-sized microsatellites, the sensors detect over 90% of methane emissions in a sector and pinpoint the location of the leak’s source within 20 meters. The optically rich data captured is further enhanced by a proprietary machine vision algorithm, enabling the automatic extraction of minute signals even against a high noise level. This combination creates an accurate differential image of methane column perturbation in near-real time. Utilizing this technology enables emitters around the world to effectively reduce their emissions and costs, while lessening the impacts of climate change.
