S2.8 How to Capture the Emerging LNG Demand in South East Asia
South East Asia has been recognized as the promising LNG market where the largest energy demand growth is expected, however, it seems difficult to build large scale LNG receiving terminals in this region.
It’s been years since many discussions about LNG receiving terminals and LNG import in this region and not so many projects have flown yet. There are several reasons or obstacles peculiar to countries in South East Asia.
Through the experience of business development activities from 2010, we have found that main obstacles are hidden in applying the conventional LNG receiving terminals concept to the emerging demand characteristics. They are so different from the traditional LNG demand such as in Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
This paper points out those different characteristics and proposes the solutions to capture the demand from two aspects. One is the demand creation in the region with strategic local partners in our real examples in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Myanmar. The other aspect is the technical solution to enable international LNG players or investors to transform the demand to LNG.
