T3.2 LNG to Power - Capturing the Cold
Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is increasing seen as a fuel of choice for clean power generation. A considerable amount of energy is expended to convert natural gas into LNG to allow more efficient transportation. Once this LNG is transported to the end user it must be warmed and vaporized back to the gaseous state before it can be used for power generation. The typical methods of vaporizing the LNG consume more energy, however it is technically possible to recover some of the energy that was used to make the LNG “cold”.
There are multiple concepts on how to “Capture the Cold” from LNG. These concepts include organic Rankine cycles, turbine inlet air cooling, export to cold processes such as air separation and dry ice manufacturing, and export for industrial refrigeration/air conditioning. Some of these concepts have had limited implementations while others are still theoretical.
The minimization of the implementation cost of each of the concepts is key to realizing the benefits of cold recovery. We will focus on the details of how these concepts can be integrated in an LNG to Power installation. Some of these concepts can benefit from novel technology applications that can simplify integration reducing the cost and increasing the benefits of cold recovery.
The optimized cold recovery concepts explored in this paper provide opportunities to enhance LNG to Power Projects. The increased efficiency of the LNG utilization can benefit the economics of the projects, while in some cases providing secondary benefits that will make the project more locally attractive.
