T2.6 Physics-Enhanced AI in Real-Time Visual Monitoring for Methane Emissions Reduction
Rebellion Photonics is a platform provider of intelligent visual monitoring solutions that make sites in the oil and gas industry safer, greener, and more profitable. Our award-winning Gas Cloud Imaging (GCI) solution utilizes proprietary hyperspectral imaging technology to detect and quantify gas leaks in real time as far as 1700m away. The system provides actionable video of gas leaks as they occur and tracks the resulting plume as it moves through the facility.
The most recent developments at Rebellion include the coupling of the hyperspectral imaging with physics-enhanced artificial intelligence such that each GCI system features Rebellion’s state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm named PEARL. PEARL stands for Physics Enhanced Artificial Intelligence Real-time Logic and is completely different from other AI algorithms. PEARL couples hyperspectral imaging, the laws of physics and data science, and operator experience to deliver real-time, reliable results.
The hyperspectral imaging technology is capable of “seeing” the spectral signature of electromagnetic radiation emitted from matter. The GCI applies this technology in the infrared spectrum to detect gas leaks and differentiate them from other gases or distracting elements such as steam, atmospheric clouds or other environmental factors - greatly reducing the false alarm rate. The application of PEARL allows the GCI System to learn and differentiate gas leaks from the specific environmental factors affecting each discrete site – even down to each of the Sensor’s individual fields of view. Thus, as time passes, the system becomes smarter at identifying and discriminating actionable gas leaks at a site.
Alert levels are programmed directly into the system allowing for a fully automated process. Alarm options are available for gas detection, fire detection, plus intrusion detection and security and the latest GCI system offers these simultaneously. The majority of hydrocarbon gases can be detected in the 10ppm to 500ppm range; fires emanating from the ignition of these gases will be detected and multiple objects can be identified in the intrusion space including people, vehicles, ships and airborne objects such as drones. The GCI is the only system capable of monitoring for Gas, Fire, and Intrusion events from a single device and is compatible with all major DCS and alarm systems.
One of the biggest challenges facing the oil and gas industry today is reducing its carbon footprint. The GCI system, coupled with PEARL, helps meet this challenge by detecting and quantifying methane leaks as soon as they occur, allowing operations to fix the leak much more quickly than existing LDAR protocols. This results in a carbon footprint reduction in the order of 10 to 100 times. With just a few GCI Systems, an entire facility can be monitored for methane emissions compliance.
