Dr Axel Wietfeld serves as CEO of Uniper Hydrogen and in this capacity oversees Uniper’s and Fortum’s global Business Line Hydrogen in order to develop commercial and technical hydrogen solutions, incl. derivatives. Under its new strategy, Uniper aims to become carbon-neutral in Europe by 2035. Axel is also Chairperson of the H2Global Foundation whose mission is the timely market ramp-up to produce green hydrogen and Power-to-X products in Europe as well as fostering its import. Axel joined Uniper (formerly E.ON) in 2002 and held a number of executive positions in its gas supply/LNG and renewables business in Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Hungary and South Africa. In his recent position as Managing Director of Uniper Energy Storage (2016 to 2020), Axel has been leading one of Europe’s largest gas storage operators. Prior to joining E.ON, Axel served as manager of two leading strategy consulting companies. Axel holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering & Management and a PhD in Business Economics.
