Accelerating towards a hydrogen powered decarbonization
Hydrogen is poised to play a pivotal role in the future clean energy mix, offering a versatile and lower-carbon energy solution that can help make a major contribution to lowering emissions – particularly in areas where emissions are hard to reduce, such as heavy industry and long-distance transport.
Global demand for hydrogen continues to grow, but largely in traditional applications uptake for new uses remains very low.
Led by the United States and the EU, governments are embracing hydrogen strategies and setting targets for bringing in new technology, but so far there’s been little appetite for policies to drive demand for low-emission hydrogen (currently less than 1% of global production).
To transition towards a more sustainable future, the energy industry needs to embrace innovation and invest in hydrogen technology. Transport and storage infrastructure for hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels needs to be scaled up dramatically to meet new applications and growing demand, and production needs to be considerably cleaner.
